In the wake of the 2005 riots in France, Denis Darzacq photographed young men and women on desolate city streets in and around Paris, seemingly floating in mid-air or plunging to the ground. In actuality, the portraits are hip-hop dancers and athletes who collaborated with Darzacq, documenting the action mid-flight. La Chute (2005-2006), which translates in English to The Fall, reflected a sense of urgency about the plight of disenfranchised youth, but also celebrated the energy and potential of a generation. Nearly 20 years on, the same issues persist and Darzacq’s warning resonate more than ever.
The series received world-wide attention in 2007 when it won a World Press Photo award. Images from the series are in numerous notable collections, including the Centre Pompidou.
